Closest to the sun? Don't believe that one.
The equater averages the warmest temperatures because of the days of the most direct overhead sunlight. Meaning that the angle is less.

As the earth goes through it's seasonal changes (most noticeable at the north and south poles) the equator remains in a relative stationary position / plane. The equator always remains closest to the sun. Think of it as the pivot point of the world. The further north or south of the equator you go, the greater the seasonal changes.

The equator is closer to the sun due to the shape of the earth. the temperature at the equator remains relatively the same though all the seasons with little fluctuations. The reason for that is that it remains about the same distance from the sun year round.

1) It is nearer to the sun for it is located at the bulging area of the earth.
2) They receive direct sunlight from the sun because they are in the middle of the earth, therefore even the the earth is tilted on its axis, they will still receive sunlight although there may be little difference.
