Thanks but no thanks 'Sewer Gas.' I am more interested in what individuals think, not what the generic answer is.

The stated goal, as voiced by this presidential administration, has changed several times. First it was the imminent threat of WMD's. Later it was to bring democracy to Iraq, to fight the terrorists, because of what happened on 9/11 (a fabricated connection), to stay the course, because leaving would destabilize the region, etc.

The president and his fellow war backers have never been very clear and definite about what exactly we are supposedly accomplishing in Iraq ever since the initial military invasion and after no WMD's were found. They speak in very broad, vague terms about things like democracy and fighting extremism, so it's no wonder that people really don't understand what exactly the U.S. thinks it's going to accomplish over there anymore.

The goal was, and still is, to change the culture of the middle east. Before 9/11 there were no (zero, nada, zip) democracies in the middle east. This lead to the region having average 30% unemployment, 40% literacy, and no free media. This is what always happens under tyrants. It also became the world's leading exporter of terrorism.

After 9/11, and our subsequent invasions, there are now 2 democracies. Afghanistan and Iraq have many problems still, but they are improving faster than any other countries in the region (democracy has that effect on people).

If we stay in the area long enough to ensure that the two democracies survive, then the whole region will begin to change. Eventually, the middle east will stop being the terrorist factory of the world. However, that will only happen if we do not leave, and it will take a long time. You must look at the long-term picture.

The "official" goal originally was to remove Saddam Hussein and his stockpile of Weapons of Mass Destruction from the country. Now, our goal is to stabilize the country. However, this is a problem because most of the country doesn't want us there.

And there are the theorized alternative goals, most prominent of which is the protection of our oil interests (or more importantly, the Bush/Cheney oil interests). Also, this seems awfully reminiscent of Vietnam. There, we felt it was our duty to stop the spread of Communism and spread Democracy. Sound familiar, anyone?

the goal in iraq is to stabalize the country
make it a safe haven for the CITIZENS of iraq...
we r trying to give them some of the properity we have in America
we feel safe in our homes...they don't we aim to allow them too

but you must understand that before that happens, there will be some opposition coming from the sunni's, and that's the fight we r in today

we must clear out the opposition so we can make iraq a safe place for many not including terrorists.
once this is done, the whole middle east will be more stable
and less a home for terrorists

i think of that is been defined, we are only no longer conscious approximately it with the aid of national protection. i think of that factor strains have been set with what the Iraqi's could finished and how we can get our troops at last all the way down to basically a help function. i've got been listening to that everlasting bases are being geared up, so i've got faith we can be there for extremely a on an identical time as. the main suitable purpose is for the hot Iraqi government to stand on their very own. yet purely as in South Korea, we shelter a presence to maintain unity.

To show the world who the bully of the block is.
Oil, and rebuilding a war torn nation with Cheney's gang of crooks padding the bill for America, making business for the chemical company's that build the bombs, the aircraft, and all the others that make money with this war.

To bring peace to the region and stability, plus economic recovery. Now it seems our goal has changed to survival mode, brings back memories of Vietnam.

Our ultimate goal is to get out of Iraq.

They never invited us and seen to clearly want us out. Let us please seriously take up their invitation and leave.
