I am an adminstrative assistant who recently got my first cubicle. My small desk is facing the hallway and my desk attachment is to the left against the wall. My filing cabinet and shelf case are behind me. I have a wall shelf right in front of me and to my left. Besides my computer, phone, file organizer what else can I put on my desk to get organized and efficient? I have important dates and a calendar on my front wall. My desk is a little cluttered because I keep too many personal and unnecessary items.

only keep what you will NEED on your desk. i hate clutter and only keep a computer, calender, staple, tape, and a thing to hold my paper clips and pencils. i also have a dictaphone on there and one photo. its the cleanest desk in the firm. just what you need.

Put your personal items on your shelf and walls. Use only two or three personal items and maybe a small plant that is low maintenance on your shelf. Keep your desk clear for work. Keep the items on your walls low key so they are not a distraction to you. Unnecessary items can be kept in your desk drawers if you have the space. Keep the things you need handy and to the front of your desk drawers.

I think you need to find a system that works for you. Some AA's have very little on their desk...others have a huge "organized" mess where to me it looks like piles, but they know where everything is.

I don't see anything wrong with personal items. Most of the AA's I work with have plenty of personal stuff all around. The one who works with me has her entire cubicle wall inside and outside her cubicle full of pictures...some personal, some of her co-workers.

This is truly AMAZING! Perfect to put on a desk, mainly on a shelf that is eye-level. People passing by will be taking a second look.

Office Depot sells a desk organizer to hold pens/pencils, gem clips, stapler, post it notes, etc... This helps more than you realize. Everything is at you fingertips.
