Retirees can either wear the uniform they retired in or the current uniform for events such as Veterans Days, Memorial Day, or if they take part in a military ball, military wedding or other event in which service to country is important. The uniform must be of the GRADE in which they retired, but it can be a modern uniform. (Sorry Sgt Big Red is wrong. It does not have to be the exact uniform of retirement. He did not go far enough in his reference and left out this line, ""(c) A retired officer of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps '' may bear the title and wear the uniform of his retired grade."" Retirees are subject to recall to active duty until they hit 60. They are not going to report under such circumstances in an outdated uniform so they must have access to the modern uniform. Changing the issue of the uniform does nothing to change the uniform of his retired rank." Most wear the uniform that they retired in as that prevents them from being mistaken for active service troops of today but it does not prevent them from doing so if they wish.
