A group of about four people is being mean to me. I took a couple classes with one of them last semester and now he has turned his friends against me. I am shy and somewhat adverse to attention. Their meanness is almost subtle and hard to act apon. They are black so it's hard to stand up to them without looking racist. I have two friends in the class but they have known eachother for a longer time and I think they only pitty me. Nobody will stand up for me and I can't stand up for myself. I think this could be avoided if I never left the side of my friends or made a new friend. I need friends for protection, bad things don't happen to people with friends. What should I do?

Avoid racial slurs and stand up for yourself. Sometimes bullies... even subtle bullies retreat when you 'head on' question them. If he is snubbing you by giving condescending looks, ask him: "Why are you looking at me that way? Did I do something wrong? Are you PMS-ing? On the rag? What?!!" Smile when you ask.

It is SO hard being shy and having to stand up for yourself. Trust me... I have been there too. The situation wasn't subtle at all, but I used humour, directly confronted him, and he ended up very embarrassed in front of all his friends.

Best wishes... whatever you choose to do, I hope the situation resolves itself soon. ~ Andrea

You need to learn to stand up for yourself and not let race interfere with this. People know this about you and can use it against you. You can be shy and averse to attention and this may even make you a target, but you can not let others dictate how you live your life. Bad things happen to everyone; friends or not, but you can not avoid the bad in this world, so learn to deal with it effectively.

You won't like this answer--but if you want to be able to deal ith people, you have to learn to do it on your own. That will take time--and maybe you should talk to a counselor to work out some things and get some ideas on how to learn to take care of yourself. Don't expect your frends to take care of you when you can't --or won't--take care of yourself.

Forget what color they are and stand up for yourself - firmly and politely if at all possible.

If they're too bad just find ways to "be busy" and not be available to spend any time with them.
