Happiness has two sources. Helping other people and gratitude for what we've got. I am convinced that people intrinsically like and need to help others, but the instinct of selfishness overrules. By the same token, many people feel entitlement and thus do not appreciate the gifts of life.

Could be that most contributions to humanity were made by unhappy people who felt they had something to prove, or that life had to be better than their current circumstances? Just a thought.

How many of those people would still be alive if pioneers hadn't developed better medical standards? If richer people had left all their money to their families and friends, instead of leaving their money to found a hospital or scholarship, public park or other schemes?

Hey, what about Charles II of England - what if his mother had given him a break instead of nagging him into getting a job?!

I guess many people in this world are very aware that while they are OK, others need help. I can't believe how many kids give up their holidays to help others. They don't have to, they are happy, but also generous. So maybe that's changing over time. You are lucky to live in such a stable community.

I think happiness is a decision made by oneself. Your community is a small but united one I presume and since everyone works in a collective sense and not an individualistic one, there is definitely less competition to go around and more encouragement. I would say most people encounter the circumstance of falling into an individualistic community where the pace of life is competitive and high strung. So I would say most of the time it's circumstance

Speaking for all the teenagers, we're just cranky because of having to grow up so fast. But adults have to face the reality that they actually have to work to live, that they can't just freaking relax when they want to. And that's why they're not really happy. But happiness, like all other emotions, is a temporary state. You are happy only for a few moments, before it wears off and you are kinda neutral. The word you're looking for, my friend, is contentness. Why aren't people content with what they got? Well, if we are too content, then we just stay still and refuse to make any changes, because we would like what we have a little too much. A little unhappiness is the key motive for us to strive harder in life. But too much will be the cause of apathy and dispair. Sometimes, you just have to enjoy the moment while it lasts.

People often confuse fun with happiness or contentment. You can choose to be content no matter what the circumstances. You can the respond in happiness to appropriate circumstances. You can then participate in activities which are fun.
People don't understand the difference. Sometimes, it is easier to choose to not be happy. By avoiding feelings, a person can ignore emotions that are unpleasant. The good ones get ignored as well as the bad ones. It's not a good way to cope, but it is a way.
It should be noted that the feelings/emotions are simply ignored and not removed or eliminated. Sometime, they will be dealt with.

Have you ever noticed that the news only (mostly) tells about the bad things the headlines on newspapers are downcasting or promote bad news. THe community promosts bad news/ bad side of things. People think it is easier to look at the bad side the to look at the good things in life. I hope i helped.

it is really hard to be truly happy these days everything is so f-ed up yea know...but some people choose not to be happy and some people just have shity lives. poor people seem to be happier then rich people because if they have friends they know they are not after their money and they don't have money so no money problems and all the crap that comes along with money but poor people have it harder and don't have the luxury rich people have so there is always gonna be pros and cons. but anyways you can't make everyone in the world happy so just be happy with your life.

Who says most people are unhappy? I think most people are reasonably content, at least I am when the circumstances of my life are not tragic. Wouldn't it be boring if we all went around grinning like possums all the time? I like moments of sheer delight that burst thru occasionally, but for everyday, give me peace and contentment.

well let me put it this way- in extenuating circumstances, some people fall and some people stand and fight. Low-income people are used to standing and fighting otherwise they would die- therefore they're generally happier. They accept more.

it is a state of mind . . .at some point a each person is responsible for themselves and their situation. It's hard to break the downness, that's why you have to be honest with yourself and actually want to be happy.

been there . . . but I literally told myself to f.uc.king buck up because no one can be responsible for my own emotions, I just blamed them for it, which was wrong of me.
