I asked a question about a law i'd heard of which effetively annexed wales for england, but a large proportion of respondants were under the impression that 'england' and 'the UK' were the same thing.

and by constitutional arrangements i'm talking about the laws which founded the UK (i.e. sucessive acts of union)

Roadkill - we DO have a constitution - it is simply a collection of precedents, rather than an actual written document.

Magpie, our constitution is very different from yours, you ignorant worm. Otherwise, why did you bother to fight the War of Independence ?

No longer shocked by ignorance - but often amused

Yes the UK is a unity of Wales , England and Scotland. Most people look at the map of the UK and think "England" but you are stressing yourself unnecessarily because the 80% of the people on earth have below average intelligence so it is a bit much to expect them to show some speed.

It is tough being in the know but that is the price we pay.

I didn't think we had a constitution as such. The Magna Carta perhaps everything else has been added bit by bit . No-one could possibly know everything that has been added it would be a question of locating relevant information pertaining to a particular subject. I'm more shocked that you think the general population would need to know that information.

Not really. I've heard the England as Britain thing so often it doesn't even bother me though it used to really piss me off. This year is the anniversary of the act of union of 1707 and most English that I've talked to don't have a clue about it. some of them think that Scotland was conquered at Culloden for xxxxxxxx sake.

I would only be shocked if the person lives in the UK and is ignorant of such constitutional arrangements.

I am not shocked. It is not surprising that someone who is not a part of that culture and lifestyle would no anything about the laws of that land.
I am a United States citizen. I no very little about the laws of other countries. I assume that there are basic similarities regarding human rights, property, and such. The specifics about government and daily living elude me. Are you shocked that so many people don't understand the United States' legal system? Should we all understand the Iranian legal system?
It might be good to know more, but it is certainly not necessary for the general population to be so educated regarding outside cultures. I don't need to know about others to live my life. Some of my leaders need to know. They have advisers and helpers. In contrast, I don't need to know everything.

As an answerer, I'm never shocked by the ignorance of people in the UK, and some other countries.

The ability of people in foreign lands to spout about things of which they dwell in ignorance, never ceases to amaze me.
