Lucky, by Alice Sebold. As a college student she was raped and this follows her through the physical and mental journey. She's got a fiction book called The Lovely Bones, told from the voice of a 14 year old murder victim. Both are heartbreaking in ways, but very well written.
P.S. This is an older book written by a Holocaust survivor, but I remember The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom being pretty powerful.
I also read a few in the true crime genre - Facing Down Evil [Hardcover] by Van Zandt, Clint - an FBI negotiator and The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer. If you like this type, you may enjoy them. The first wasn't bad; the second was slightly gruesome.

STOP NOW if you cannot handle strange philosophical ideas. Life Is Real Only Then, When "I Am" by G.I.Gurdjieff.
Author of "Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson" which is either the world's most well rehearsed hoax or a volumnus grouping of writing which in his words said, “I had decided with the contents of the first series of books to achieve the destruction, in the consciousness and feelings of people, of deep-rooted convictions which in my opinion are false and quite contradictory to reality.”
Oh yes reading anything by him will achieve the destruction of brain cells or you achieve enlightenment. Or both. Or neither.

I haven't read many biographies, but this one is amazing
La Prisonniere by Malika Oufkir
its about a woman who when she was a girl her father conspired against the king of Morocco. He failed, and her and her entire family were thrown in jail for 17 years ( I think) its an incredible story about survival and the strength of the human spirit.

"The Moon is a Balloon" & "Bring on the Empty Horses" by David Niven. They are hilarious!! Both of the books are wonderful stories of a real gentleman. A man of class. And he speaks frankly with compassion. Then there is the humour, you're gonna love them.
