I think that's why they called it "dirty" dancing. I'm not sure if that kind of dancing was around in the early 60s, but if it was , it was real dirty for it's time !

The movie did indeed portray the way people in the 60's danced. After you watch a movie do you ever happen to read the credits at the end ? You'll notice the crew consists of professionals, trained in areas of expertise. I'll bet if you do a little research on the choreographers of this film you'll see they; like the other crew members knew what they were doing to make the film be as authentic as possible in telling this story.

Grease is definately the greater advantageous action picture of the two. 5 stars for Grease and 3 for grimy Dancing. Grease does have greater advantageous songs inspite of the incontrovertible fact that this is only reason that's a musical as grimy Dancing isn't..yet DD does have some classic songs in it. and of direction DD has an outstanding quote "no person places infant in the corner"

Yes, and good dancing goes back decades, even the swing band dancers were way better than people you see in clubs today.
For some reason , many young people have lost the dance aptitude . (although some are good enough for movie presentations, like Take the Lead)

Hey Adriana, You got it right.
It was largely made up for the movie. In the sixties, that type of close contact while dancing in a public place was just not allowed. Apart from that, think about any dance you been too yourself. Do you think that you would be able to have the whole floor to yourself? I don't think so.
Although there were certainly dance competitions, they were more demure than what was portrayed in "'Dirty Dancing"

The EARLY 60s were still pretty prim and proper, a continuation of the 50s. Perhaps it started in the late 60s with the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll beginnings, hippies and free love.

Yes, but only professional dancers did it that well. Ordinary people just freelanced.
