We started it and now we don't know how to finish it. Isn't that a hoot? We need to start withdrawing troops gradually instead of sending more in & let the Iraqi people stand on their own. They majority appear not to want us there anyway. It seems as if we are forcing our way of doing things on them & they don't want that. Why is that any different than Sadaam telling them what to do? Let them make their own choices. There are certainly enough intelligent Iraqi people to be able to set up some sort of government & they now have their own Army & police so they need to be allowed to use them. If we don't give them a chance to show what they can do on their own, they'll never be independent.

A better question is, why was leaving Hussein in power such a completely unacceptable idea? Sure he was brutal and executed people. Sure he was a dictator. Sure, he'd probably bomb Israel given the chance (SCUDs anyone?) but Israel has survived, and is better prepared than most, to survive worse. Sure, he was lots of things we in the West, with our Western biases, did not like. But compared to the mess you Americans have got into in Iraq now, he was definitely the lesser of two evils.
Kicking him [Saddam] out of Kuwait was the right thing to do, in the time and place it happened.
Right about now however, in a different time and place, he would have been damn useful in dealing with Iran if only as a "balance of power" player. Right now, there is no true balance of power in the Middle East, just an artificial one created by the presence of Western troops propping up the new Iraqi government. When America leaves Iraq, which it must inevitably do, it's a sucker's bet to know what country will fill that vacuum.

It could happen if the top dog would swallow his pride. With our America Soldiers lives and maimed limbs, that will never be the same again. But the top dog feels his opinion is the best answer, for who? I know that some of the Military has stated that Iraq is a living in hell. Our Troops do not know who they are fighting & certainly do not know who to trust. Now he is asking for $quarter-trillons for wars. This is for Iraq & Afghanistan. When a news conference at the Pentagon was held yesterday, you could see the disappointment on the Denfense Secretray Robert Gates & Joint Chief of Staff the General Peter Pace. You could tell they have no more options, but most will not stand-up to the top dog!

It appears that President Bush wanted to help Iraqi people and introduce democracy. Present situation was unexpected. There are many groups fighting with each other. Shia, Sunni, pro-Saddam elements, Al-Qaida etc. Whole the world is disturbed. Syria and Iran should also support Mr. Bush to normalize the situation as it is human issue. More responsibility lies on Government of Iraq to bring all hostile forces on discussion table and be apart of great revolution which will only take place if there is complete peace.

This reply is to ShockHer:
What do you mean those people are sick? Are you talking about the Iraqi's? If anyone is sick, it's the Americans, no wonder Americans are hated. You go in there to take out Sadam, now u occupy the country! You need 21,500 more troops, cause your troops are dying off daily..... Bush needs that many more troops because he doesnt want to leave all that oil behind. Americans are sick for slaughtering the poor Indians and stealing their land away, looks like they are doing it again, this time for oil. And Iraq wont rot away, they have super rich neighbors, like Kuwait and UAE and Bahrain and Saudia Arabia, who wont let that happen. Its soo funny hearing from people like you, all you know is America, so you think its the best country in the world, you people need to go out and travel, then you will look back and realize, america isnt as great as Americans try to make it sound... If I were American, I would be damn shamed !

There is no answer to your Question. They have been butchering each other for over 2000 years, and have no intention of stopping, in the name of Alla. You can not stop a barbaric society from being what they are. As in all Religious "Wars", there are only bodies. You take 1, I'll take 100, and on it goes. The people in "power" seem to have no moral fibre left in their souls. They train their Children to be bombs, killers, haters. If you could stop the hate training, then you might have a chance. But, God help us, that is not happening.

This mess should never have started. We now have a choice. We can leave, and save American lives by leaving the country to rot. Or we can commit more troops (Bush's proposed increase is not nearly enough for this) for about 5-10 more years to stabilize it. Either way, it won't be a pretty result for the US. I personally say to hell with Iraq and pull out. We may look bad, but our current course will only worsen the situation.

I cannot say I agree with what he did, since my husband has had to go there, but if we pulled out now basically it was for nothing. We have to commit 100% or no one will believe the true purpose we supposibly went for. There are photos and proof there were weapons of mass destruction. People like one of the previous answers wished my husband dead because he is a Marine. Until ppl stop thinking like that and having so much hatred, it'll never get better.

It's difficult to fight a humane war - going by the rules on ground or in prison - with people who are inhumane and sick...the Americans should've gone in there 100% or not at all. Now, they need more troops, when they should've had them in the first place. Torture the prisoners? Damn right, because look at what they're doing to our men. Bomb a whole town or city? Damn right, look at the all the innocent lives lost on 911. Do it, or don't do it at all. Cold hard facts of war that should be kept as a war.

We have many values in America that stem from our religious beliefs, but our government is run by making policies. Iraq was also run by religious groups having major influences over the decision-making process. We have influences from religious groups in our decisions in the U.S., but in Iraq, it has been far greater. You can't impose a system of government run by policy into a country that runs things by its religious groups. You also can't fight other people's freedom for them, and it seems like in Iraq, not enough people want freedom badly enough to fight for it.
