How do you tell if a fish is male or female?

I have goldfish and I am curious.

With goldfish, they must be mature. This takes about two years. You will see small white dots (tubercules) on the gill covers of the male that the female does not have.

Up until they develop the tubercules, the males will be more slim and streamlined than the females who are typically stockier and wider in the body when viewed from above.

goldfish need to be at least 2 years old, females anal vent pokes out a tiny bit(convex) while the males anal vent in concave. When ready to spawn the male gets brite little dots or "stars" on his gill plates & his pectoral fins thicken, and sometimes those brite dots appear on the pectoral fins as well. Goldfish usually spawn in the spring, and they eat most of thier eggs pretty much as soon as they are dropped

i think goldfish are not as easily sexed as other fish..like guppies, swordtails, etc. i could never tell anyway and just picked which i wanted to be the boys & the girls & named them accordingly. they didn't seem to mind as long as i fed them

Put the two of them together in a tank. After they have sex the one that falls asleep in the male.

the males are more colorfull and their fins are longer ,with fish the females are usually plain looking
