Hi,

Your desktop takes up RAM space. You can have 1000 icons the RAM amount won't change, but your hard drive space will decrease...a little. Now those little icons on your right at the bottom of your windows desktop are actually programs running in the background and DO use RAM and take CPU attention. If you have more then 10 you really should remove them. Try right clicking on them and exiting.

To make them stop starting up when windows starts up goto Start > All Programs > Startup. (in XP) That should stop a few. The rest require professional services.

Good Luck

Well, having too many icons on the desktop is irritating, thats for sure. Anyway, too many icons on the taskbar (the one near the clock) will DEFINITELY take up your RAM space.

Yes but mostly your virtual memoery is used up trying to create the images ect... if you have good RAM this will be of no problem whats so ever.
Personally Desktop icons are used to be quick and flooding them with icons defeats it's perpose.

I'm sure it takes up some, but little. Just enough to house the icon graphics file, text, and mainly its target file reference information.
