It's always got to do with either the enviroment they were raised in or their brain. Some people are just sociopaths and can't really feel any emotions that others are expressing. Therefore, they don't understand that they are hurting someone else physically or reputation-wise.

Others are influenced by their friends and the need to be "cool". To be a big-shot in everyone else's eyes. Thus, they compete to see who can do the stupidest thing of all and become King Idoit.
