The cable guy connected the coax cables in this order: 1) The cable into the house is connected to RF IN on cable box. 2) RF OUT on cable box is connected to VHF/UHF IN on VCR. 3) VHF/UHF OUT on VCR is connected to CABLE IN on TV. And he connected HDMI OUT on the cable box to HDMI IN on the TV. Viewing TV when I select the HDMI input works fine. Recording with the DVR works fine. However I'm not able to view TV nor record TV with my VCR when I select the cable input (Again, the cable input is where the coax cable finally ends.). Should I be able to view TV and record TV with my VCR using the signal on the coax cable and the aforementioned connection configuration?

DCT3416,

Sure you can record with your VCR. Are you sure it is hooked up the way you describe? RF out of cable box to VHF/UHF in on VCR? That should work. Can you play a VHS tape?

If you can't play a tape you are not connected correctly.

When you do record don't expect digital quality. It will be old fashioned VHS quality.

You shouldn't even want to use your VCR now that you have a DVR box. I moved my VCR into my bedroom & connected it to the TV there without a cable box, mostly for my son's movies that we haven't been able to afford to replace on DVD or have had time to copy.

Get used to your DVR by recording on it & see how much clearer your shows are. I love that I can pause a show while I go to the bathroom, drop a load of laundry in, sort mail & go back right where I pressed the pause button. Try that with a VCR & it'll stop the tape or auto-rewind it.

I'm only keeping my VCR until all my VHS movies are onto DVD, either copied or replaced, depending on the VHS quality to copy.

when you're hooked as a lot as a cable container or sat. dish then you surely can take a piece of coax cable & come out of the receiver the position it says "OUT TO television" & bypass into the vcr the position it says "IN FROM ANT" popping out of your vcr is "OUT TO television" connect this to the television. Now to list a channel, go with channel 3 or 4 on the vcr distant, go with the channel you want to list off the receiver & push list. you need to be able to view what you're recording as quickly because that's all set up too. strong success!

Lets see... digital (DVR)... analog (VCR)...

That's like asking for an X-ray rather than a CT Scan.
