Well, it sort of depends on the genre and the characters personality; If it's a fantasy, try a simple, yet strange and obscure name with one or two diacritic marks. Unless its a fantasy, and the characters a good person. Try simple, sweet, and something easily recognizable, so people neve forget (Frodo, Harry Poter....) For sci-fi, try something with little or no accents, a little bit longer than fantasy with a dash in it somewhere (Obi-Wan....). For mystery, just write a normal name.
