Two problems. Either the transmission is gone, which is a big problem or the belt is broken. It is easy to change the belt. IMPORTANT! Disconnect the power to the dryer before working on it! Open the dryer and see if the belt is broken. If it is, go to your local dealer of that type of dryer or a appliance repair shop and get a new one and install it. If the belt is good, the transmissions are usually about the same price as a dryer. It is suggested by consumer reports that an older dryer be replaced instead of repaired, but you have to make that judgement yourself. If it is older than 10 years, and the repair is more than a belt, probably buying a new one makes sense.

you did not give us the specs of your machine but anyway thats a great question,if you smell something which is unnecessary,i think you must first plug out your machine from the power supply.If you know a little something on electrical troubleshooting,open the cover of the machine,i think its on the back side and take a visual inspection,check the ff;
1. the spinner or motor-check for abnormality
2.check the fan velt which is in coupled with the motor,i think its loosed out.if this so re adjust the belt so that it may fit wit the motor shaft pulley and check for alignment,thats it..
if assuming that the motor is normal and the spinner pulley is also not deformed,i think it s the fan belt that is not in correct position...when the motor rotates,the belt cannot drive the spinner
thats the caused of bad smell your thinking about...
3.consult to the manufacturer and ask for asistance

I agree with the belt. It's easy enough to get a new one and depending how old the washer is, you may get a new one for free! And the smell is definitely burning rubber. My husbands a plumber and we run into that problem alot. Good luck and happy laundering!!!.......................leasafb
