Sometimes water leaves a mineral deposit. Most water items recommend distilled water to add to the life of the item. (steamers, irons, and such)

These minerals can build up a residue and can cause problems later on, including odors. This is especially true for anything that steams

Also appliance type items can also get infested with things like cochroaches, and even small mice, which will leave droppings. Either of these will leave a smell. If there were no droppings in the water basin, there can still be bug droppings in the motor, a favorite.

I would scrub down the water basin and try it again with distilled water. If it is still there, and it is definately not the smell of product, I would consider replacing the unit, in case of contamination.

You don't need a special kind of water, but you may want to try using purified, bottled water, just in case your tap water has something in it that makes it smell a little icky when it turns to steam.

First step, though, is clean out the whole unit completely and dry it with paper towels, just in case there is some mold or something in the unit that is contributing to the odor.

I'd clean it out and try it again... otherwise you should just get a new one. They are under $10 at Walmart.

No special water is required, it may be that you've let the water in it "go bad" or something... it sounds ruined to me.

That is the smell of camphor. For me it really clears up my head. For a really congested chest I use it like the old people do and rub it all over my chest and wrap in a big towel, by morning I feel like a new person.

Fill it with Cranberry juice. It probably has a urinary infection.
