The umbra is a cone-shaped shadow formed by the Moon's blocking of the Sun's rays. The shadow tapers to a point because the Sun is larger than the Moon, therefore at some angles, parts of the Sun can be seen. The point of the taper represents the farthest one can get from the moon and still block the entire Sun.

Any other shadow is part of the penumbra, which is only a partial blocking of the Sun. It fans out from the Moon instead of tapering, but is weaker as it spreads.

Wherever the umbra touches the Earth, there is a total eclipse. Wherever the penumbra falls is a partial eclipse.

The umbra does not always reach the Earth. When the Moon is not close enough to block the entire Sun, its shadow falls short of the surface of the Earth and produces an "annular" eclipse. Observers can still see a ring of Sun around the disk of the Moon.
