The purpose of an airstone is to create a current in the tank so that oxygen can be exchanged at the surface. An airstone actually adds very little oxygen to the water. That occurs at the surface. It also moves sediment around in the current so it can be picked up by the filter intake.

If the current is too strong at the intake, less debris will be picked up and the tank will stay dirtier than otherwise. I usually try to have any air stones at the opposite end of the tank from the filter intake.

Yep, the result of having an air stone too near a filter inlet is that, it might stop working if it's an external cannister type or it be very noisy if it's those internal filter. In both case the suction power of the filter will reduce or totally lost in certain condition.

listen up the guy in the corner is dead on the only other thing that might happen is that if the airstone is close enough that the bubbles are sucked into the filter it may lose its prime & stop working

Yes, debris from the water may not make it into the filter if the bubbles block it
