I have 4 guppies but they have recently become aggressive towards each other? 2 espically have been acting very strange.. chasing each other round the tank and 'fanning tail out and swimming backwards very quickly'..(Hope that is a good enough description) Any particular reason?

If you only have one male, I'd be willing to bet it's one of the ones that's always involved in either the chasing or being chased. What you're describing is mating behavior, the male is displaying for the females by spreading out his tail and doing the odd swimming behavior. If the female doesn't want to mate with the male, she'll chase him off like you're describing. Chances are, he'll go right back to displaying for her. They're relentless little guys!

Also, you can tell the males from the females by looking at the fin coming from the middle of the bottom of their body. A male has a long thin fin, while the females will have broader, triangular fins. In this manner, you can definitely tell whether you have males or females and what the ratio is.

It should be good 2 have 1 male per two or three females, ..2 males will fight,. the male has a stick like thing coming from the front of the fin on the belly, and they have more color. if u cant tell, go to a pet store.
Ok, get either a seperator or take a male guppie back to where u got it.

it's the way gups mate. Th male displays his colors to th fem. He's very agile in closely chasing her - this is y u observe th quick darting around her.

Male guppies are testerone factories. As soon as he mates w 1 fem, he's off looking 4 another. Best ratio is 1 male to 4-5 females. If 1m-1f or even 1m-2f, th fems would get no relief.

Are there males and females? Because that sounds to me like breeding behavior. How many males and females do you have? If you don't have at least 2 females for every male, the males will literally bang the females to death.
