If it's working, you can freecycle it. Go to Yahoo Groups and find the Freecycle group near you, then post an offer.
I used two old refrigerators as raised garden beds. I cut the backs off with a Sawzall and filled them with soil. They're great to start plants early because you can cover them up at night, and the insulated walls hold the warmth and protect plants from freezing.
I am planning to cover them with some siding to hide the plastic look.

Here in Detroit area, if you put a 'frig to the curb for pick-up, you MUST remove the door so that a small child cannot climb inside to hide, and get caught inside with no air and no way out. Major bulk pickup is a couple times per month, I think, and that's provided by a service that is under contract with the city. But there are sites, if you check with your local waste disposal services division, whereby, you can take the 'frig for proper disposal. Some of these sites, unfortunately, charge a small fee to get inside the fenced yard. I wouldn't try breaking it up yourself. If it still runs, put a big sign on it and set it to the curb during daylight hours. Someone will probably want it.
P.S. - You might be able to find a phone number in your local phone book for the City to come and pick up the item, or a similar service (like 1-800-GOT-JUNK) is available for a fee.

I'm sure you don't want this answer, but the best was we ever disposed of one was to let my angst-ridden brother (was a teenager, go figure) go at one with a rather large ax. Who knew there was regular old insulation in the walls of a fridge? I do now. After it was chopped up it was driven over to the local waste transfer facilty and they had a special spot for it.

I tried to donate one and nobody would take it. Tried salvation Army, Goodwill, Amvets... nobody!

Maybe they are afraid of having to dispose of used freon if they don't work. So we just put it out on the street on a bulk trash pickup day.

If you want to get rid of an old frig that works, donate it to Goodwill; they may even pick it up. On the other hand, I was told to put the company's frig that quit working in the trash dumpster . . . city trash crew picked it up, crunched it up, done deal.

Put it in the back of a truck, find a country road, open the tail gate, back up real fast and then hit your brakes. When the frig falls out drive away. ( at least thats what my uncle did)

Donate to Goodwill or place in a dump (remove doors first).
