Yeah, it's important in some less than obvious ways. First, it contributed to the failure of the Schlieffen Plan (Western Front) because they transferred troops to the East for the battle. The speed of Russian mobilization startled the Germans. The Russians gained ground in Eastern Prussia more quickly than the Germans expected and while the Russian advance may not have posed much real threat at the time, had they kept gaining ground at that pace, they were going to get dangerously close to Berlin. This caused the Germans to pull even more men from their main force, in order to reinforce the Eastern Front. While this proved unnecessary, since the forces pulled from the Western Front were still in transit during the German victory at Tannenberg, the weakening of all-important right wing was problematic for the Schlieffen Plan. Contributed to its failure and the loss of the war for the Germans.

It's considered the single most brilliantly conducted operation of the entire war. The Germans destroyed the Russian 2nd Army and Russia’s plans for quick victory in the East, saving Prussia and Berlin. As I mentioned, this is the “battle won that loses the war” – Germany has diverted troops to the Eastern front, thereby sealing the death of the Schlieffen Plan, which ultimately ends in the loss of the war. Hindenburg becomes the symbol of the war to the Germans, the first great hero.

The Germans crushed the Russian second and first armies in eastern Prussia, thus beginning the end of the Russian contribution to the war effort. The Russian army did not set foot in Germany again until the end of the Second World War.
