You can paint the concrete to look like tile. We considered doing this down in our basement. Part of the floor is painted, the other half is carpeted. It really depends on where you live, what room you are talking about and if it's the basement. If you put carpet back down I'd put a moisture barrier between the padding and the cement. If you live in an area that gets cold I would put carpet down. The floor gets so cold it would really make you uncomfortable during the cold months. If you are in a warm climate you might want to just paint the floor. It'll keep your house cooler.

Slab house are fun that way, aren't they? Personally, I'd recommend ceramic tile. Use it in the 'heavy traffic' area(s), then make transition to carpet. Painting or staining concrete inside the living quarters gives a 'cheap' look to the home.
If you tiles the entire area, you could still use area rugs as accent. Use natural color tile and form a pattern such as herring bone or forty-five degree in center surrounder by straight pattern on border.

You could stain it with a concrete stain which can be purchased at any paint store, DO NOT use paint because this will cause problems for future installations of another product. Ceramic tile or vinyl tile would work for you too, don't be fooled the self-stick vinyl tiles will adhere to a clean, sound concrete floor and its something you could do yourself as well as the stain, good luck

You could look into getting the concrete tinted if its in good shape. Or it would be a good base for wood floor. You can get wood panels pretty cheap at home depot or lowes, cheaper if you get fake wood. As far as carpet I would look into some think padding. Then there is always tile or vinyl.

What would like to do with it? Paint or stain it ? Go right ahead. Take it to dinner? That might be chancy and boring. Personally, I would cover it. Carpeting is warmer and softer to walk on.

Why don't you consider installing hardwood floor over it. It would add value to your home.
