Short answer: they hate themselves. Butch lesbians suffer from a severe case of penis envy; they wish they were born as men. Since they weren't, they project their self-hate onto all men while at the same time trying to ACT like one. Naturally, since they've never been a man, they fail at trying to be one. This just causes more anger and hatred.

It's a vicious cycle.

On another note, I have a couple gay (male) friends, and none of them have ever known any gay guy who was dating men because he hated women. There seems to be no gay male equivalent to the butch lesbian. Just an interesting sidenote.

Most of the man-haters I've met are ex-married heterosexual women. Most of the lesbians I've met don't think about men very often, whether the women are butch or fem or androgynous. That's not hate. That's just indifference.

A lot of insecure men see indifference as hate. For example, "if she doesn't respond to me, she must be a man-hating *itch", when instead, she just doesn't notice a guy, no matter what he's doing or how he looks...he's..boring..

These women try to exaggerate their masculine traits and end up as little more than a characature of men. Hating straight men comes from the fact that they are competition for the women out there. Sure, men compete with other men in order to snag women, but since the butch lesbians will often see these straight men win out over them for the woman's attention, hating them becomes natural due to competitive circumstance.

Maybe they are the ones who call your attention. Not every gay is also the typical guy with feminine manners. And there are a lot of beautiful lesbians. Think of Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich or Domino. And I do not think that lesbians hate straight men, they just do not care about them and that makes paranoic men think that they hate them because they feel so bad when they are ignored that they have to blame the girls to recover their self-esteem.

Why do stereotypes prevail? I think that people don't have enough sense to realize that these negative stereotypes are not true but some misinformed opinion of men who feel threatened by women who choose another woman over them.
