It's now spelled 'Tombouctou' and it's located on the Niger River in the central part of Mali (Africa).
How do I know? I've been there (for real ☺)

You spelled it right and the city is located in Mali, (Africa). It is famous for education and knowledge.
I have never seen the spelling (Timbouctou), that may be a French spelling. French is a popular, sometimes official language in regions of Africa
