For the past month or so my toilet hasn't really been flushing...I flush and usually the toilet paper will go down but the rest just swirls around. It flushes completely once out of every ten flushes or so, so whenever someone goes number 2 the toilet must be flushed over and over again before everything's gone. It used to flush perfectly and I know I haven't flushed anything down it that shouldn't have been flushed.

I live in an apartment and I guess if the problem doesn't get any better I'll have to call a maintenance man. Is it something that might take a while to fix or is it an easy fix? What caused it to stop flushing completely anyways? Anything I can do so that it doesn't happen again?

Lift the lid to your tank and see how full the water is, if its not all the way to the top of the vent tube it will be harder for your toilet to work properly since most require a full charge of water to get the job "down" right. If that doesnt help then probably the sewer line needs to be rootered because of a partial obstruction. Ever notice how much we take indoor plumbing for granted til its not working? :) Good Flushing to you.

Step 1. Flush a few more times to clean as well as you can. 2. Turn off the water to the toilet. 3. Flush again, now remove all the water that's left from the tank and the bowl. 4. Use a small compact mirror and a flashlight to look up inside the toilet for and thing that is not suppose to be there. Be patient, it takes a little practice. 5. If nothing is obstructing the bowl going up, then you will need to take the toilet loose from the floor, lean it forward very carefully, and look up the bottom side of the toilet bowl with the flashlight for and foreign objects. Hopefully it is that simple for you and can retrieve whatever it is easily. It will only cost you the price of a wax ring, about 5 dollars, to reset the toilet.

There may be an obstruction in the trap of your toilet that is partially blocking the waste and thus slowing the process. I had this happen one time and the toilet eventually stopped working at all. It was then that I had the great pleasure and removing the nasty toilet and finding a soap dish blocking the trap. Of course, all the other girly things followed behind that. I was not dad of the day that day!

You might have hard water that leaves deposits in the little holes under the rim of the bowl, to cure this problem you'll have to pull your toilet and unplug them. I have an expensive toilet so it's something I had to do but for the price of a regular toilet as low as $60 or $80 it might be worth your super to put a new one in, try the previous answers 1st cause that's the easiest , good luck

it could be a couple things...one u may have a blockage in your main line that needs to be cleared... 2 you may have a transfer problem with the toilet. transfer prob is when build up acurs around the flush vavle(where your toilet tank and toilet bowl meet) this will cause the toilet to flush improperly and the water to swirl.. nothing more. to correct this u need to replace the toilet

I had this problem, too! I had a plumber come out...he told me that tree roots were growing into my main drain line. He told me that tampons and Charmin brand toilet paper can cause toilets to flush poorly as well. If I were you, I would call the apartment manager.

Look in the tank and see if it is filling up just below the overflow,if it is try using a plunger,if that don't work you can buy Rid-EX I believe that's the name,it's suppose to help clean your septic system, you just pour it in the toilet and flush it down.If none of this works you may have to call a plummer....

Hi Stephanie,

There could be several reasons.

You line might be partly blocked or your tank might not be filling high enough. It should be an easy fix. The fact that water does go down tells me your problem isn't too serious.

Call the maintenance man and get it fixed.
