I think it is just because cats fight with any animal they don't know. When i first brought home my kitten my older cat HATED her!! She did not want her around at all, and would have done harm to her. But after they have known each other for a few weeks they got more comfortable. Now after a few months they love each other, and i think they would be really sad if we ever lost one of them. I think it is the same for dogs. I think cats don't like dogs because they are a new animal in the house hold. But after they get to know each other they learn to either tolerate each other, or love each other. And i think dogs chase cats JUST because they run. I think when they see an animal run they have that instinct to chase it. We have a cat at our clinic named Buddha. He doesn't love dogs, he looks down on them. When dogs come in the clinic, their owners often say "Oh, he hates cats, you should get that cat out of the way" But then they are surprised to see that the dog becomes less interested, or UNinterested in Buddha when Buddha just walks around and ignores the dogs all together.
This is just what i think through my experiences of working with both dogs and cats. Both separately and together.

Cats are typically not as social as dogs are in general. Many dog breeds will not tolerate cats, but almost all can be socialized with them from a young age. Cats are independent animals for the most part and do not share the same pack animal traits that dogs do.

there is a nice story here in Africa about that, they said one time ago the cat & dog was friends and love each others, so people don't let them do hard work for many reason (Dog because of his sincere) and (cat because of his clean), and give them certficate about that, the Dog take these certificate and hide it on safe place (the place he hide his food) so they live long time in love and respect, so that don't like the rest on animal so they make a plan and let the rat find out that certficate and he do it and find it and eat it, so after that the cat think the dog is careless and he start hate him from that moment and never forgive him :)

Most animals including man are enemies to each other, and we see dogs and cats fight often because they are close to us, and you have there, obviously, some kind of sibling rivalry so as to get most of the master's attention by fighting and sometimes not fighting.

Cats are naturally prey for dogs. But they can get along if introduced properly. None of my dogs have ever fought with either of my cats.

i think it is because dogs like to sniff, and cats arent all about that. so cats feel threatened, plus most dogs are bigger then cats, and if you saw this huge thing running towards you wouldn't you feel a little threatened?

different species that are just as prejudice as humans! also, they have different attitudes, cats are delicate, tend to be elegant in their movements, dogs (puppies especially!) tend to be galumphing great clumsy palyful things. Cats like to be the boss, and on top of all that there is the jealously thing too!
