Hello,
We are moving from the mainland at the end of February. We are having a tough time finding rental properties on anything other than craigslist. My husband plans on starting a business and the commute is not a very big issue for us - we are just looking for the best place to raise our kids. Any suggestions?

You will need to contact a realtor in Honolulu. The most family friendly environments are on the other side of the island from Honolulu. Some of those areas where US military have retired are the best bets if you are caucasions. Expect some serious racial discrimination in trying to do business there. You really should go check it out and talk to people who live there before you just up and move to the islands. Talk to the business people who moved there and opened a business, not the local folks who have businesses. You will find some serious competition and some very, very loyal customers to the locals.
Hedge your bets.

Best of luck, aloha nui,
