You intend to place a protective cover on the book, like the way school books are covered by students? If you can give a few more details, it might help... but...

If it's a cover you will hang on to, say to cover a reference book (Dictionary, Bible, Thesaurus) that you use and carry often, you will find a variety of specialty covers in book stores. Some have zippers, or they are in leather-- it just depends on what you want.

You can also make a reusable book cover from fabric. Just measure the cover from the front edge, around the back, to the edge (lie the book flat the front and back covers open and measure that way). Leave yourself some space at the top and bottom to stitch over a hem, and leave some extra fabric on the sides to fold a pocket to slip either side of the book cover into.

For a paperback- you could possibly cut a cover out of old blue jeans (depending on the size of the jeans- thrift stores might be a good source of cheap fabric) and a side seam could even provide extra protection for the back spine of the book. Remember your pocket and seam/hem allowances.

If you can't sew or don't have access to a sewing machine, there is a product called "Tacky Glue" that is a good substitute. Craft stores also carry a web fusing that you can set between two layers for fabric and Iron them together. Ask for it at the sewing counter. For a fabric cover, investigate fabric paints to decorate it.

If you won't be using the book harshly- gift wrap might be a good otpion. If you are covering a special book and happen to be particularly creative, you could even crochet a cover or a little purse to protect the book.

Book Covering Ideas

When I covered my books, I would use just the regular brown paper and then I would stick pictures, print-outs from the internet, magazine cutouts, etc...all over it and make a collage. Then I would use clear packing tape to kind of laminate it. And with all the paper, stick-ons, and then all the tape, these were some pretty sturdy book covers.

I used to cover some of my paperbacks with contact paper. It comes in a variety of designs (or clear) at places like Walmart.
You can also go to the library supply sites (Highsmith, Brodart) and buy clear plastic book jackets like libraries use. These go over the paper dust jackets on your books and keeps them pristine.

I remember way back when... a friend of the family made fabric book covers. You can get any pattern you want from the fabric store. She would sew them. Of course, I've seen spandex book covers made to a standard size in stores, as well. Have fun!

Anything you can find!!! I use pictures from magazines, pictures from the Internet, a photo that you took, WHATEVER YOU WANT!!! Or (of course) you can get a soft book cover with tons of designs on them at almost any store (between $0.50 and $3).
Check out your local stores and magazines!!!

If we're talking schoolbooks - a roll of wallpaper is reasonably cheap and will cover a shedload of books.

You can have a big headshot of the girl in the middle of the book, then her old life, like her parents or maybe her friends on one side of her, kind of in the background faded, and the other side can be her new life, maybe the name of the town on a sign or if theres a snotty group of kids at her new school on the other side, also in the background faded. And the main girl in the headshot can be looking off to the side of her old life, because thats the one she wants more.

I work at a toy store, and sometimes when I'm reading more adult books I'll wrap it up in the store's gift wrap. It's quite handy ;)

I use packing tape to keep the binding of my math books together. Duct tape would also be interesting....
