Hi....I don't know how this works on a set in stain, but Carbona has stain removal products made for specific stains, and red wine is one of them!! I have used it on a fresh stain, and it worked great. You can find them in the stain removal product area in the supermarket. It comes in a small yellow bottle. Good luck!!!

Go to the grocery store and buy some NON Clorine bleach

It comes in powder form and it has oxidizing properties that are different from Clorine bleach. It will defenitely remove wine stains you describe. Costs about $2 for a box here at Krogers in Midwest and is in the soap aisle. No stinky clorine smell either.
