what is the best way to dispose of small appliances (ex. irons) that are no longer working?

Unless it's environmentally unsafe, throw it in your trash. And I can't think an iron would be.

Check with your local recycling center to see if they will accept it whole or maybe you will have to take it apart.

Chuck it in the trash. Its not environmental, but its the easiest.
