ok, i have 2.53gh proc 512mb ram and an onboard VGA card which takes it memory from the ram. My computer runs slow when playing games. Does this mean that i should get a stand alone graphics card or should i just upgrade the ram?

You would need an add-on graphics card, though it couldn't hurt to install more RAM, as well. 512MB is not a lot by today's standards anymore. I remember when everyone used to say, "128MB of RAM?! You'll never even need that much!". HA! Sorry, anyway - the add-on card will free up whatever RAM is being used by your onboard card, and 99% of the time it has it's own onboard processor (GPU) which handles graphical instructions - leaving the CPU for other tasks (though, the CPU is still required to process some instructions to the graphics card - most of the graphical instructions completely bypass the CPU altogether).

Getting a stand alone card would help increase your performance a lot. It uploads most of the graphics processing from the CPU and ram which would make your computer and games go much faster.

Get a standalone card, you already havee plenty of RAM.

On board video is very weak compare to what today's run-of-mill cards.
