I am making a dress and putting a satin border around the bottom and i would like to know how to make it not fray without sewing/hemming it.

Either zig-zag the edges on a sewing machine or cut the ends with a pinking shears.

I would suggest either using a product called "Fray Check" that I usually would buy in a material or sewing store. You probably could also use clear nail polish as well.

Definitely test on a scrap piece of satin border first too see how little you really need of either product and to test for discolouration. (I found out that with "Fray Check" it did give a "wet" appearance on the material e.g. silk or satin if too much was used, that it seeped further on into the piece of material).

If all the tests worked out to your satisfaction, It would also be best to do this process to your actual satin border BEFORE you actually sewed it to the bottom of your dress as the liquid needs to dry first.

Run a thin amount along the very bottom edge that you will not be sewing. You really do not need much of the product or the clear nail polish.

NOTE: Instead of using the associated brush, try a cutip or a toothpick to spread or dab thinly along the edge. You should also have another person hold a short length of the border away from you and you or someone else hold the other end while you apply to the edge. Keep the band straight out until you are completely finished the application.

You do not want any part of the band to fold against the edge you just painted, which will stain that part. So once done drape the entire border over e.g. your shower curtain rod to dry, thereby each half of the border is separated by the curtain.

Hope this helps.

The fray check that was suggested works very well but you could also use a ribbon the same color as the satin and glue it on with a product called liquid stitch. Glue the ribbon on top of the cut edge and allow to dry. If the ribbon is narrow enough you should not be able to even tell it is there. Liquid stitch is very strong and will not let the ribbon come off. I have had the problem of hemming tape coming off so I wouldn't use that.

Zigzag on the edge, use pinking shears and/or use a liquid item you can buy called Fray Check.

You can buy hem tape, it will go on the edges of your material and iron on. You should be able to buy it at the fabric store.
