My personal feeling is that the Kashmir issue will not solve the India-Pakistan relationsip problems. Partition has gone deep into Pakistan's collective psyche, and if the Kashmir issue is settled and no longer exists, some other issue will raise its ugly head, and the conflict will continue on the new issue for a few more decades. But we shall restrict ourselves here to solving the Kashmir issue, not concerned at the moment on what other new issues will arise subsequently.
The more you cling on to something, the greater are the forces that try to take it away. India has fallen into this trap viv-a-vis Kashmir for decades. And we continue to offer all kinds of compromising sops to please and protect our "Kashmir interest", often to our own detriment.
We have two options.
First, repeal Article 370. Let Indian Kashmir's economy be "opened up" like any other economy. Let people from the rest of India set up infrastructure and industry (of course taking care that tourism is not harmed). Let there be more employment. Let there be more prosperity for the region. When you're prosperous and content, you don't seek change. It's going to be very difficult, with lots of opposition, violence, maybe a limited war. But hard decisions can never be implemented easily. And the long term benefits FOR KASHMIR will be immense. And Indian Kashmir will WANT to remain with India.
The other option is to offer Kashmir independence on a silver platter. The Kashmiri knows the region cannot survive too long by itself. It has been too dependent on India to prop up its existence. The Kashmiri has the option to turn to Pakistan as a crutch, but I seriously doubt that will come about. He knows he'll be much more assured of a stable future with India. And I highly doubt if Pakistan would want to take on the extra burden. I wouldn't be too surprised if our offer for independence will not be taken. Turning it down would probably be seen to be the more prudent course.
I wonder what others think.

Both Kashmirs should be united as one land and demilitarizaton of the zone. Indo-Pak can develop a joint mechanism to manage and benefit from this initiative.

No simple answer. Won't be resolved until somebody comes up with a political process that all the parties sign on to. Years of conferences and position papers and shuttling ... no magic bullet.

Let the people of Kasmir decide. Perhaps the best thing would be to create an independent state - if it is economically viable.
