I can't believe that someone told you not to get a goldfish because they die too quickly!! Goldfish are supposed to live 15-30 years, but often only last a few months (if lucky) because of the crap conditions they are kept in. That said, DON'T get a goldfish!! lol

What you need to do is tell us what size tank you're thinking of getting, type of filter, etc. Also, google "fishless cycling". You can't just add fish to a tank because the ammonia will skyrocket and poison them. (And contrary to what some might say, just because a fish survives through a cycle does not mean it is unharmed!!)

There are several lovely community freshwater species out there that you would enjoy. If you want low maintenance, keep your tank slightly understocked and don't overfeed.

The lowest maintenance fish out there would be the betta (siamese fighting fish). There are many varieties out there now, not just the boring old veil tail. (my fav is the crown tail!) Keep one of these guys in a 5 gallon heated and filtered tank with some plants and he'll be a happy camper. Once your tank is cycled, you can add your fish and then you'd only have to change about 25% of the water every 3 weeks or so. Just be careful not to overfeed.

In a larger tank however, there are lots more options.

Without knowing you tank size, nobody should have recommended anything. I'm giving all the answers a low rating. Goldfish are high maintenence and require a large tank.

Well depends how big your tank is to start with? I suggest Guppies. They are very EASY to keep and breed. They dont need filters etc Just right size tank and 3 females to 1 male ratio. They like a few plants too.
Gold fish like someone else said die too quickly. The other great thing about Guppies is that they are live bears .. they give birth to live babies!! Very exciting to watch. Good Luck!

Goldfish produce a lot of waste and require a lot of room, but they are great and I have seen them live for years if taken care of properly.

How much money are you looking to spend on the fish, food, aquarium, and everything altogether?

How big of a tank do you have room for?

Don't get any fish at all until you research what it takes to keep them alive. Really, you have to learn how. They are not undemanding decorative objects. I recommend reading at lots of fishkeeping websites, like www.aquarium-central.com and www.myfishtank.net .
