So, format it for whatever filesystem you use. I use the very secure ext3 in my GNU/Linux systems, as they never fragment.

You could try it, as it also formats to any of 124 formats. qtparted is one live cd rom at http://livecdlist.com and a favorite distro is also http://pclinuxos.com Allo can re-format USB devices, drives...

Yes, plug it in and if it doesn't pop up on your desktop, go to the start menu and select 'Removable Devices'.
