I know, of course people are going to say "Gay people are just as diverse as straight people!" etc. And no, not all gay people are flamboyant. But a fairly sizeable percentage of gay men DO have *that* accent (I can't describe it, but you know exactly what I'm talking about.) Why do they choose to have that annoying voice? It isn't a biological trait, it's a voice they choose to have. It's very annoying. Why can't they just speak with the voice they were born with? Couple the voice with the hand gestures, the absurd camp behavior, etc., and wow, those people are annoying. And AGAIN, I know--not all gay people are like that! I'm not talking about them--I'm referring to a certain sub-group within the gay community.

Ashley, I'm well aware of the diversity of the gay community--including ultra masculine "leather" guys, as you mentioned! I wasn't stereotyping all gay people as 'effeminate'--is that what you're saying?
But to deny that any stereotypes have ANY truth to them is also wrong... a certain group of people in the gay community DO have the accent I was talking about!
And nope, never lost a man to a gay man!

I agree with you 100% As a gay man, it really bothers me and turns me off. I don't think most of them realize how they act. I believe it is done purposely and to "announce" to everyone that they are gay for whatever reason you would need to do that. Some will say they are speaking in their normal tone but I can't take that. It becomes contagious after a while and they don't realize how they present themselves. I've found myself at times acting more "femanine" around it and then I know it's time to get away from all of that. HATE IT!

what makes you think that gay men "chose" to talk in a higher pitch than a straight man? I have a real high pitched voice I guess you could say and I KNOW that I'm straight, if you heard MY voice would you think that I'M gay and that I'M using it for the heck of it? You really should be ashamed of yourself for making such presumptions without concrete evidence. Oh and by the way I have several gay male friends, so I know from experience that it is NOT them doing their voices like that just for the h*ll of it, I just wonder if you can really say the same.

Yes, it totally annoys me!!!! The gays I know all talk like that!!! Even big brother has never had a gay man that doesn't talk with that voice...... and that's a reality show, thus they are REAL people, not made up fictional characters on some soap opera!!!
I love the camp behavior though and the pomp of it all, its so over exaggerated and very enjoyable to watch the over exasperated gestures they make!!!
I could watch them all day, like my own little t.v. show!!

I heard a gay man with a normal tener voice. I just think the voice your talking about is a sterotype that actors in tv use to portray gays.

I really have no clue. I have no problem with homosexuals (I work at Express clothing store so 85% of the guys I work with are gay), but what you are talking about really is annoying. I find it more immature than realistic. I haven't a clue as to why someone would prefer to be severely annoying.

I find it funny.
Think of Jack from "Will and Grace."
He's a riot.
Also, Carson Kressley from "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy."
But to your point, it is a contrived speaking style.
It's not authentic.
But, they're flamboyant! Let them just be "fabulous."

Seriously, I only know of a limited few gay men who use "the voice." I actually know more straight men who affect such a lilt to their speech.

Your right, not all gay people do have that"voice". My gay brother in law does not. Although I also dont get why gay people cant just be gay in the sack but still be manly (or somewhat feminine for lesbians) it dosent seem to matter. they do because of circumstance "we" dont fully understand.Like why do some people insist on speaking ebonics? And its not just black people or all black people, its some people that do for whatever reason. Hey,more intelligence for us.
