You are allowed to take Christmas Day and Boxing Day off as religious festivals. They can not force you to work these dates and any contract that claims it can is against the law.

They have to give you Christmas Day and the public holiday - Boxing Day if you live in the UK. You do not have to be a Christian to be awarded these holidays

I think if they allowed people to take time off during Christmas, a lot of people would rather spend time with family. Who would be at the hospital?
