Joe Satriani, hands down! Just listen any of his albums, but especially "Surfing with the Alien", and you'll know what I mean! He's the one who taught Steve Vai and the guy from Metallica (Hetfield, I think) to play better.

Most people say Slash from Guns n' Roses is, and I'll have to agree with them. Come on, you only said who's the best guitar player alive right now. If you want more present day guitar players than I'll have to say either Synyster Gates from Avenged Sevenfold or one of the lead guitarist from Dragonforce like Herman Li.

As someone who has played guitar for more than 35 years, and someone who plays and enjoys jazz, rock, classical, etc., I'd have to say Lenny Breau. Many will answer Jimmi Hendrix, SRV, Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, and others, but if you were to ask these players who they thought was the most talented guitarist, they would likely include Lenny in thier top three.

Lenny was murdered while in his prime and there are only a handful of albums out. I met him in 1974 when he gave a guitar clinic in my city.

If you are a guitarist and want to study the licks of the greats, check out Lenny Breau. AMAZING!!!!!!!

Different aspects of talents. For speed-oriented talent, Jimmy Page. For creativity (the man couldn't even read music) Jimi Hendrix. I put my vote into Eric Clapton as the most well-rounded of them all. He's done pure blues, pyschadelic rock, blues-rock, and even country influenced rock. He's never played a solo the same way twice.

I love Jimi,Stevie,Eric and all the greats, but to me THE MAN is Les Paul.He didn't just loan his name to a guitar. He invented it and invented some pretty cool effects back in the early 50's while the"greats"were in diapers. And just fyi - Les Paul is still alive and playing weekly in NYC
