You might be surprised at what all is not that common. I am. There are many things I assume anyone would know and I've found that others never heard of it. As a credentialed teacher, I blame our education system.

People who are lonely and long to communicate will sometimes play ignorant just to get attention and to communicate with others--no matter how ignorant it may make them appear.
