Elements are often named after the home country, city, or state of the person or persons discovering them. The discoverers of Europium named the element for Europe, which was incidentally named for Europa in Greek mythology who was the woman Zeus carried off in the form of a bull to be his wife (incidentally, he carried her to Europe for their honeymoon - you know how liberal those Europeans are).
