I am not poor..There have been times when I have made a lot of money and some lean years.. I have had some upscale cars.. Porcshe, JAG, Mercedes. My current car is a 2001 Toyota Camry Le - basic white. Not fancy..But due to its practicality I love it. My wife thinks that since i am now 40 and can afford much better, it is not appropriate for me to drive this car and it makes me look unsucessful. I do not care about cars too much anymore and would rather have the car paid for and $ in my pocket.. Any thoughts out there?

It doesn't project that you're unsuccessful. It projects that you're practical. If status symbols aren't important to you, why on earth would you shell out $30k + for a car? If your wife is concerned about image, let her drive the fancy car... and take her car when you go out together. Or, let her make the payments on your new BMW.

Ok my husband and I are around your age. We are retired.
We just sold the corvette and bought a Jeep Liberty! Our other car is a Dodge Intrepid ! We are not filthy rich but comfortable.

Maybe your wife feels the way she does because in your line of work (?) Status means promotion. Maybe she is conditioned to having the nice cars and finds the transition to the Camry extremely hard .

I have a relative who is a big muckity -muck corporate vice president for a major US company -----He drives a Black Toyota Camry 2001!

If it really bothers her you can compromise and either buy /rent another Mercedes etc just for her.

It really doesn't matter what you drive, life is life! Drive what you like. If you feel you need something to make you look good then you must look bad or your insecure! A car's is a car and they take you from point A to point B, nothing else! OK Snotty beam me up to my Porcshe.

not at all....there are just as many people who don't "show off" their money as people who do. i am the same way. i drive a cheaper car because that's ustmore money in my bank if i need it, and more money to have fun with! as long as the car is reliable, and nice looking, save the cash, buya toyota, or a honda. excellent on gas and cheaper than the big guys.

a car is transportation...nothing more, nothing less...except to the imature person who sees it as a status symbol...whether that person is the person driving it or walking down the street looking at it.
