"Colic" is a 5-letter-word for "the doctor doesn't know what is wrong." A better phrase to use is "the hurting baby" because it reminds us that all that crying isn't to manipulate us or frustrate us.....it's because the child hurts.
Odds are that it is one of the following:
- reflux
- if mom is nursing, maybe an allergy to something she is eating
- formula allergies

Colic is just a word meaning that something is hurting your baby. It can be gas, acid reflux a lot of things. you need to go to your doctor and make him take the time to figure out why he hurts. So many people think colic is just a baby who crys a lot, but its not, its a baby who crys because it hurts from somthing. Dont let your doctor just blow you off by saying its colic, cause there is a reason and he needs to find it.

No. The colic causes the gas.
Just a note of caution, don't be in a hurry to just blame colic... if you're bottle feeding, try a different (soy based or liquid or different brand, or gentler) formula. My niece's pediatrician answered my sister-in-laws cries for help by saying, "It's colic, she'll grow out of it." Well, my niece screamed in pain for 9 months, then almost died before they figured out she was lactose intolerant... All because the doctor wouldn't offer any more help. Be proactive in finding out the source of the discomfort.

That's one of the theroy's. I took a class where we talked about colic and was it interesting to find out that you only find colic in so called civilized societys. In 3rd world countries you don't find colic. The big differences are that those babies are all breastfed and are carried around most of the time and sleep with their moms. Some researches believe that has a lot to do with it.

Actually the gas is sort of trapped by a spasm in the bowel.just like a cramp when you have the runs.so keeping gas to a minimum is helpful,so a medium flow teat or breast feed is good. A warm bath before the worst feed sometimes helps relax the bowel. there are special colic drops that affect the lining of the bowel that are given before a feed.this needs to be prescribed, there are over the counter drops but they act on the gas.Be prepared for the aby to be very fussy after the worst feed, usually between 4 and 6pm for some reason.

No colic comes from the lining of the baby's stomach. Colic babies HAVE lots of gas and their tummy hurts alot. They usually out grow it. I was a colic baby , not fun for my parents.

well, i guess it is the common belief. It is true in the instance of my daughter and after I ate any food with spice in it. I am a massage therapist and studied Infant massage. What you can try is to rub the babies belly clock-wise, the direction that the large intestine runs. Not too hard. It is a gentle thing. Worked for my baby and the colicy babies in my mom's church. When an infant would cry they usually ended up in her arms.

Actually it’s caused by your baby’s undeveloped stomach and is very common,
Stomach gas’s just make things worse but should go away in about 2 months on its own.

Yes. If you have a colicky baby, run the vacuum cleaner. Somehow the sound of it relaxes them and puts them to sleep. It's amazing.
Read up on it all you want. Parent of children here and lived through the experiences. The humming sound worked for both of them.
