I purchased a used computer. I'm starting to regret it. It is requesting an administrator password for updates. The previous owner did not supply me with one ( I have sent them an email requesting it). I also have no web browser at all. Is there anyway to install a browser without one. It also didn't come with the CD's most computers come with. But I knew that when I bought it.
Help!!!

I take it you did not post this question from that computer (obviously)?

You might want to check eBay for the retail Tiger install DVD. That might be your best bet. A fresh install would be advised if the previous owner messed things up to that degree.

What version of OS X is the machine running? Under the Apple Menu select "About This Mac". Under "Mac OS X" should be the version number (i.e. - 10.4.8) this will help in finding out which version of Safari you would need.

Also, in Finder, try File -> Find... and do a search for Safari. It is part of the OS install, so unless the previous owner deleted it, it should be there.

Feel free to IM me for further assistance if you would like. On AIM, my SN is osxrulz

Good luck

edit: alenm8816... That's not completely true. You don't "install" Firefox per se. You just drag into /Applications. If the user she is logging in as has Admin privileges, she should be able to drag Firefox into /Applications. BUT. Firefox doesn't necessarily need to reside in /Applcations. She could drag it anywhere in her home directory and run it from there. Having said that I still contend that getting the Install DVD and wiping the drive clean and reinstalling the OS is the best route.

you cannot do anything without the password. And you can reinstall the MAC OS, but you dont either have the CD´s, so your mac is useless.

And even though you want to install Firefox, you can not install anything if you dont submit the password.

You need a software cd,preferably of the same version you are running to reinstall Safari. If you are not running Tiger I suggest you consider purchasing it and upgrade your system to 10.4.8. Do a clean install and all should be fine.

it is handed off to my iMac in the previous besides. quite of formating and reinstalling the mac, you should locate a chum(with the same version of Mac OS X ) , reproduction the his "Safari" folder from his applications folder and paste it into your application folder. Has worked for me over the years.

If I where you, I would just re-install OS X. Go buy the OS and install it. It will restart EVERYTHING to factory settings. From their you can customize everything to suite you.
