Why do we find people of the opposite gender or people of the same gender attractive?

I am asking beyond the mating instinct, instead in connection with love and relationships. Why is it that we find some people attractive and others not? And why do we find some people sexually attractive and other 'partner material' and yet others both.

Please explain your answers and if possible (but not required) quote scientific evidence foy your answer. I thank you in advance for your insight.

Facial symmetry I've heard is a sign of good genes and so are good looks they indicate health usually. Also we go for people with very opposite genes to balance or mix ours for example when a blonde goes for a dark haired guy. We can also be drawn to people that remind us of what we are familiar with so similar genes as to the ones in our family, so some people go for people that look like themselves.

Think about it this way,
mating instinct and "love" or "infatuation" cannot be separated. They are essentially the same thing. Just different means to the same end. Procreation.
No matter what humans are driven by the need to procreate. Weather it is a one night stand or a long term relationship.
Men are wired to impregnate as many women as possible, and women are wired to seek out the mate that will best provide for them and their children. The one thing that both males and females have in common is that they will seek out mates that they feel will give their common offspring a competitive advantage that they either cannot give or value highly.

The next time you find yourself attracted to a potential mate stop and think about what you find attractive about them. Then think about what you would change about yourself. I think you find the answers pretty similar.

As to why some people choose long term relationships with one person and not with another, it could be that a person will invest in a relationship to further help their offspring be successful, i.e. quality over quantity.

there actually was a show on tlc a few years ago called "the face" or "the human face". it actually stated that symetry is what makes people "beautiful" or "unattractive". even if they have big teeth they are seen as beautiful as long as the rest of their face is symetrical. check out the tlc web site you may be able to find it still. they actually had a face chart that you could print out on clear plastic and use a picture to see what you look like. john cleese and elizabeth hurley were the hosts of it.
