It certainly has here in Texas.

Here in Texas, there are breaks for the residential homeowner that the landlord doesn't get.

And because any businessman passes his expences allone to his clients, the renter, in a sense, is likely to be paying more property taxes than the homeowner.

Kate, you are comparing two different areas.

The question is, "Is the property tax in your particular area higher than it was a few years ago?"

Not in California, thanks to Prop 13 (1978), which lowered property taxes by an average of 57%.

We pay a max of 1% based on the assessed value of the property and that value can only increase by a max of 2% per year.

My family used to own property in Texas and the property taxes were horrible. I'd much rather pay state income taxes like we do in CA. We had to sue the city of Ft. Worth every year over their assessed value of our property. It was sick. That's one of th main reasons we sold the property.

It has increased as well in my area. It's sort of a shame. People try to do something that is better for them long-term (renting versus owning) and are penalized for it. You would think that they should be rewarded since they are in a sense more stable (appearing to stay long-term in a community which adds to the town's revenue since people are more likely to buy in their surrounding areas). There's nothing wrong with renting and I hope I didn't just offend someone. I basically just ment that from a buying perspective it is easier to move out off a rented place than a place you own.

Unfortunately, increased much is vague . . .
People here complain they have , but I just moved here
and I pay 20% of what my friends are paying back home.
How much do you consider much ?
