If you live in the U.S….
A 17-year-old is a minor in every single state. Therefore, Mom & Dad (or whoever has custody) get to decide where they live, UNLESS they have been emancipated in some manner, such as marriage (requires parental consent) or court decree (NOT an easy thing to obtain. Note: a minor cannot simply “declare” themselves emancipated in any state).
A runaway 17-year-old certainly can be picked up by the police and returned home. Granted, in larger cities, where the police have big crimes to focus on (murder, rape, etc) and they know the minor is safe and provided for, they are *sometimes* reluctant to get voluntarily involved. But if Mom & Dad push the issue, they will. And if they don’t, all Mom & Dad has to do is request that a judge order the minor be returned home (an easy thing to obtain). Once that’s done, the police have to follow the order.
At 18, you can move anywhere you want.

I don't know if that is true, but I do know, being 17 myself, that your step father can lie to the courts, convincing them that your going to kill your two younger brothers (whom you love), and get them to order you out of the house and into an apartment which is smaller than your room at the house and in the worst part of town (drugs, beer, violence, the works)

Depends on what state you are taliking about. Here in Ohio, you are not of AGE until you are 18 years old. If you take off before that you are classified as a runaway.

Yup, it's true. At 16 they can declare themselves "emancipated youth" and be gone.
