Your sound card drivers are missing or corrupt. You must re-install them. However, you must first know what sound device your system has. If you don't, you will need to find out.

I'm assuming that your system is a pre-built from a manufacturer such as HP or Dell. You can visit their websites and find the Support sections, then input your make and model number to find documentation of your hardware components. Most likely, downloads will be available for your system, including driver updates. However, the driver updates available on the computer manufacturer's site aren't always the latest drivers for the specific hardware component you wish to update.

In that case, find out your sound device vendor and navigate to their website's support section. Find the downloads section and browse for your specific model. Download and install the latest device drivers, then reboot. Problem solved.

Once you reboot, you may need to go back to Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel to tweak some settings, as re-installing the drivers will reset the previous configuraiton.

it sounds like the sound drivers have got corrupted, with your pc you should have got a couple of discs, one is drivers and utilities, put this in and install the sound drivers or if you have no discs go to the manufacturers website and get the drivers from there
