I know it sounds weird but while contemplating a story idea, and after watching a special on a Yellow Stone explosion, I wondered what it would look like from space. I mean what would the ISS astro/cosmonauts see? I'm sure the sky would be entirely black sulfur clouds and most means of communication with ground control would be gone. So what would they do?

How long would their supplies last? Wouldn't they need to eventually attempt a landing? Would it work? Wouldn't it look like the very alien worlds they were meant to explore once they land? They'd have to wear their space suits to breathe in the sulfur atmosphere, right?

I don't know anything about how astronauts and space technologies work, and I'd like this to be a particularly realistic yet epic story that explores how small man is compared to the collosal forces of the universe. So my question is how would this scenario play out, realistically.

The ISS astronauts would definitely be able to see the ash cloud from space if the Yellowstone caldera were to erupt. If they need to come down from space, they would still be able to land, if by space shuttle, in two locations in Europe and if by capsule (Soyuz), they would land in Russia.

If Yellowstone blew, the entire world would be affected. Crops all over the Earth would fail, temperatures would plummet and any help for the guys in space would never come.

A Yellowstone explosion would be an extinction event. It would certainly cause the collapse of modern civilization and almost assuredly cause mankind and most animals to go extinct. Very few animals, including man, could survive a worldwide freeze for several years. From the moment the eruption started, people on the ground would be fighting for their lives. Nothing would be spent to save a few lives in the space station.

Up there, they would see the clouds and probably the red magma. They would lose all contact with the ground. They'd have no way home - even if there was an emergency shuttle (there isn't), there's no way to land successfully without ground control. So in reality the astronauts, in seeing the destruction of civilization in space, would also be watching their own slow deaths, knowing that no one will save them and they won't return to Earth until the station crashes back home in about 1000 years. There would be nothing epic about this tragedy.

Realistically they woudl see the devistation from the station and stay put for as long as they could. Russia sends supplies up to the ISS, so that would be safe for some time. If I recall, they have supplies to last 6 months if they must. I would not want to be up their and know that my family and friends are diing down here. It woudl be metally very difficult for them up their knowing they are safe from any immediate harm.
