You will get a lot of people telling you that DSL is better and faster and others will say that cable is better and faster. At my work we have DSL from a company called Eschelon, at home I have Comcast Cable. Between the two they, in my opinion, are about the same speed wise. However, at one point I had SBC DSL that my neighbor & I shared (we split the cost of the bill) and honestly it wasn't that great.
I love Comcasts cable internet however, it is more costly than AT&T or Verizon's DSL. I pay $48 a month where the others, depending on which package you buy from them, can run you $14.99 a month on up. A friend of mine has Verizon DSL, she has no complaints but then again she doesn't know much about computers, internet, etc. so she really doesn't know the difference between speeds. I've used it a few times at her house when I was checking her computer (something goes wrong she blames the computer, I should say she blames my computer because I was nice enough to give it to her with a printer & scanner at no charge. She never thinks it's her who knows very, very, very little about computers or the internet.) and as far as speed it seem pretty decent.
So really, the choice is yours and also if the service is available in your area. For instances, Verizon is available in the very next towns North & South of me, however I cannot get Verizon DSL as it is not available in my city (I know, it's strange). If you go the AT&T DSL you have to have AT&T phone service. I actually have Comcast phones so I cannot get AT&T DSL, but I have Comcast phone & cable so I can get Comcast Cable Internet.
Now as far as what equipment you need. For you desktop you will need a modem to hook up to either the internet cable (you'll need a cable modem, you can purchase one from the store or you can rent one from Comcast), if you sign up with AT&T or Verizon you can get the DSL modem's from them as well. They are all pretty easy to hook up. In order to have you laptop hook up you will need a wireless-G Broadband Router (there are many manufacturers, I tried Net-Gear and honestly it was a piece of garbage. I now have Linksys, it's a little more expensive at times (unless you find a great sale) but a lot of computer experts I've talked to prefer the Linksys) that you connect to your cable or dsl modem & desktop.
For your laptop you can do several things, if you don't already have it in your computer (which most laptops generally come with it already built in) you can buy a wireless card either internal or external. Or you can buy a wireless adapter. I would recommend the wireless card, and if you aren't computer savy then get the external wireless card. I have found the people at Staples to be very helpful in helping you choose what's right for you, you can also bring your laptop in so they can help pick the right one for your computer.
Once you have your modem (either for cable of dsl) connected to your wireless router & desktop, and you have the wireless card connected to your laptop you should be all set to go as the wireless card for the laptop will read the broadband connections on the router. Just make sure to secure your router so no one can utilize your internet connection.
Good luck!

equipment can be bought as a package....
Belkin and Limksys both have good "g" band packages that you can buy cheaper that seperately....when I had my laptop I had a belkin wireless card for the laptop with a wireless router....I don't have the laptop anymore....most laptops are now wireless built in....but in my desktop I have a linksys wireless PC card.......diff is one slides in a slot on the laptop the PC Card plugs into the PCI slots on the motherboard and has an antenna that sticks out the back....
You will need a cable modem or dsl to connect to the router and cable... Walmart has Motorola Cable modens pretty cheap.....you can also ask the service provider if they have one included in the internet package pricing.......
unsure of where you are or which you will use AT&T has some promotional stuff happening right now....check them I pay 69.99 for cable and 100mbps internet with two email address'
wireless internet is cool It's like a radio station that transmits a signal on 802.1(g) and some newr frequencies.....I was one of the dumbest people when I first got my wireless......not far from there now....but I am going to school for IT training (comp. tech. / network admin) so I tell you I am going to learn more about it (hahaha) anyway I hope this helps ya.......

1st you need a wireless router and a laptop capable of wirless and if it is not built in then u need a usb wirless reciever for the laptop. You will also need a modem which a internet provider probably provides.
next you need an internet serivice. For DSL verizon is fine at 20 dollars a month and for cable its comcast but it more expensive.
wirless internet works by the internet thats coming through your modem goes in a router and that router transmits the data in frequencys throughout the air and that data is recieved by your laptop.
